Protecting your olive tree from frost

Most of the olive trees in our range are hardy, which means they can tolerate frost down to -15 degrees. This applies especially to older olive trees planted in the ground. For smaller and younger olive trees, a temperature of around -5 degrees applies. If there is a prolonged period of cold weather and you want to be on the safe side, it is best to provide the right protection. For olive trees planted in the ground, you can use a winter cover. Be sure to open the zipper of the cover from time to time to prevent mold. You can also wrap the trunk with a light hose or heating cable. During long periods of frost, it is best to wrap the trunk with fleece or burlap.

Protecting a potted olive tree in winter

If you have an olive tree in a pot or planter, it is best to wrap the pot in several layers of bubble wrap. The insulating material ensures that the cold cannot reach the roots of the olive tree. If you are dealing with a long period of frost, it is also best to wrap the trunk in fleece or burlap and protect the olive tree with a winter cover. It is not wise to leave the cover on the tree all winter; remove it from the olive tree as soon as the temperature rises above zero.
